What is Veganism?
Veganism is not synonymous with healthy food. Vegan simply means that there are no animal products in the food you eat, or if you consider yourself a vegan, in your lifestyle as a whole. If you have chosen to leave the animals alone, it is an excellent first step. The meat production business is a nasty one. Not only are animals treated inhumanely, it also requires a lot more of our natural resources to breed and raise these animals for slaughter than it does to farm plant-based foods. It is better for our planet to eat vegan. However, know this, eating vegan is not necessarily healthy. If you are eating sugar laden, saturated fatty fast foods, having an Impossible Whopper instead of a pink slime one, does not make you a healthy eater. Plant-based is probably more accurate if you are looking to eat more healthfully. Plant-based refers to not only the practice of not consuming animals, but also consuming foods that are derived from plants.

It is also important to consume foods that are minimally processed. This means that the food is in it’s whole form. Foods that meet this criteria are typically referred to as whole foods. A whole foods, plant-based diet is the goal. Not only leaving the animals alone, but consuming foods derived from plants in as close to their original, natural state as possible. Foods that are processed, whether plant-based are not, should be avoided if optimal health is your goal.

Why Gluten-Free?
Many grains contain a sticky substance known as gluten. Many people have sensitivities to gluten and as a result avoid gluten in their diet. Thankfully, there are many grains on the market these days that do not contain gluten. You can find pastas made of rice, quinoa, even beans. There are tons of options available to those of us who avoid gluten, whether you are sensitive, it doesn’t agree with you, or you just feel better when you avoid it, you can find an alternative.

When I first started avoiding gluten due to sensitivities, the options were limited and maintaining a gluten-free diet was difficult. That is not the case any longer. Vegan foods are better too. There are better cheese options, better milk options and thankfully whole, plant-based foods are readily available in almost all supermarkets.

Any recipe you find on Health Tastes Good is vegan, plant-based, gluten-free and contains no refined sugar.
