I am a mother (two young ladies and two dogs), a cook, an artist and a breast cancer survivor. My journey began in 2009. My routine mammogram revealed something suspicious and when the biopsy came back, my doctor called me with the results. She said, “It is not good. You have a cancer.” I almost fell off the treadmill I was walking on. My doc offered no guidance or advise. I felt lost and terrified. I didn’t know what to do. But, I am a survivor. I gathered myself together and began to research in every way I could think of to learn more about my situation. I thought I was going to die. The first thing I did was to find a new doctor!
The cancer docs told me I needed a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation. Since it was a stage one cancer with no evidence of spread, it seemed like a harsh route to take. The medical oncologist told me that there was a 2% absolute benefit to be gained from chemotherapy. 2%!!! So, in my mind, there was a 98% chance it would not help me at all or even make things worse. This did not sit well with me. My body is extremely sensitive. I don’t react well to drugs, etc. If there is a harsh side effect, you can bet I will experience it.
I learned, through my diligence that I could benefit more along the lines of 10% or more by changing my lifestyle, especially my diet. To me, it was a no brainer. I opted for surgery only to remove the tumor in my breast.
When I informed the doctors that I would not be following the traditional route, they pitied me. They made me feel like I was not going to make it. Turns out, over a decade later, I am still here and doing extremely well!
That is what brings me to the development of this website. I completely overhauled my diet. I cut out processed foods with long ingredient lists and got back to basics, the way my grandmother cooked. From scratch.
I threw away all chemicals I used on my body and started to moisturize with olive oil, coconut oil and very clean lotions. No more junk on my skin or in my hair.
And, I started a yoga practice that would bring me into focus, heal my mind and tone my body.
Today, I am still living a clean lifestyle. And, I want to share my healthy eating with you. The recipes you will find on HealthTastesGood.com will always be vegan, gluten-free, ultra clean and plant based.
To the nay-sayers who used to tell me I am denying myself the foods I want to eat, I say this – FALSE. Whole foods are the best, most nutritious and tastiest foods you can eat. I learned a new way of cooking that excited me and made me look forward to every meal. I have gained a new respect for our mother earth and the fruits she shares with us. And, it is wonderful!
I have had two local recurrences of breast cancer. But, I feel like I have been able to control the aggressive beast that keeps rearing its vile head. The cancer has not traveled from the original spot it infested. I am a conqueror! I look and feel healthier than ever.
