What is the difference between healthy and unhealthy food? How do you know what to choose? There are many definitions for “healthy food”. The major differences between healthy and unhealthy food has to do with its nutritional value, food additives, fats and fiber. The body’s cells need an alkaline environment to work while cancer and invading bacteria thrive in acidic medium. The pH of healthy blood should be slightly alkaline. The body maintains its pH balance through a series of complex chemical reactions, and the food you eat has an acid or alkalizing effect.
2. Healthy food is not refined or processed – Refining and processing makes for unhealthy food. Refined foods are made with chemicals. During the process of refining foods, most of the vitamins and enzymes are killed, and the fiber is then extracted leaving little to no nutritional value in the finished product.
3. Healthy food provides antioxidants – Antioxidants support natural defense of the system against free radicals released by the metabolism of food. Without antioxidants, free radicals wander inside the body and damage the cells’ membranes as well as alter DNA.
4. Healthy food does not contain monosodium glutamate as well as MSG-like ingredients –Monosodium glutamate is a food additive and flavor enhancer. Excitotoxin is MSG, and can have a devastating effect on brain cells, particularly in children and unborn babies.
5. Healthy food provides maximum balanced nutrients – Whole foods provide optimal nutrition for every cell in your body. Research shows that vitamins are naturally present in food that is better digested and utilized by the body than vitamins extracted from synthetic food supplements.
Health problems may still occur despite consuming a healthy diet, but healthy eating can make a difference in the severity of health problems. Environmental and genetic factors can also have an effect on one’s health. In addition, it is always important to have regular checkups with your doctor even if you eat a healthy diet. Healthy eating will reduce the likelihood that you’ll need all the medical tests or interventions of drugs by your doctor. This will reduce the amount of money you spend on medical expenses which may be beneficial.
